It looks like a fantastic career when you’re a professional sports star, but it doesn’t guarantee you a financially secure future. History is littered with examples of superstars going broke, and our local heroes are no exception.
This excellent article names some of the investments that have succeeded – and failed – for various All Blacks and Black Caps.
Less than lucrative have been some of the more out-of-the-box investments, like Carter’s fashion label and Stephen Fleming and Brendan McCullum’s involvement in CricHQ. Some unusual investments have performed well, however, with Marc Ellis’s Charlies a stand-out. James Parsons, too, has turned to property to help him invest his income, even planning a second career as a real estate agent. Great to see that young players are being encouraged to improve their financial literacy.
